Find Johnston County Inmates

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail and posts a public inmate list online. You can search the Johnston County jail roster to find people held in the jail right now, see a primary charge, and check an arrest date. Each name opens a short profile with a photo and a charge list. The roster is a custody snapshot, not a full criminal history. It only shows people in the county jail, not folks in state prison or federal custody. Knowing how the list works, what a profile does and does not show, and which office to call makes a Johnston County inmate search a lot faster.

Johnston County Jail Roster Overview

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Steve Bizzell, keeps a public active inmate inquiry on the county website. The roster lists people housed in the Johnston County Jail at the time of the last update. It refreshes often. On May 25, 2026, the list showed 297 individuals housed in the jail, with a stamp reading "Data Last Updated" and the exact date and time. Counts shift daily as people are booked in and released, so the number you see will not match a count from another day.

This jail roster has limits worth knowing up front. It only covers the county jail. It does not show people in North Carolina state prison, anyone on probation or parole, or inmates in federal custody. It also will not list someone held in another county. For state prison, probation, or parole, use the NC Department of Adult Correction offender search. For federal inmates, use the Bureau of Prisons locator. A missing name can mean release, a transfer, a different spelling, or a hold in another jail.

How to Use the Johnston County Inmate Roster

The active inmate inquiry opens with a disclaimer. The Sheriff's Office says the tool is provided as a service, makes no warranty about accuracy or completeness, and bars commercial use without written permission. You must click "I Agree" before the list loads. After that, you land on the housed-inmate list, where you can sort and click any name to open a profile. The list itself does not have a name field; you scan or sort it instead.

Start at the Johnston County active inmate inquiry and follow these steps.

  1. Open the inquiry page and read the disclaimer, then click "I Agree" to load the current list.
  2. Use the "Sort By" dropdown to order the list by last name, first name, arrest date, or charge description.
  3. Scan the list for the person; the most recent bookings show up when you sort by arrest date.
  4. Click the person's name to open the inmate profile with the photo and charge table.
  5. For bond, court dates, or the full case, pair the profile with the eCourts Portal or call the clerk.

For someone booked in the last 15 days, the recent arrest search is the faster path. It accepts a name or a date range, which the main roster does not.

Note: the roster is a custody list only, so it will not show every charge, hold, or court file tied to a person, and the charge label is not the final filed charge.

Johnston County Inmate List Search Fields

The active inmate list does not work like a typical name-entry search box. You agree to the disclaimer, the full housed list appears, and then you sort and click. The fields below show what the list page actually offers and what each result column means. The "Name" column links to the profile, and the "Data Last Updated" stamp tells you how fresh the data is.

Field LabelTypeRequiredNotes
I AgreeSubmit buttonYesAcknowledges the disclaimer and loads the list.
Sort ByDropdownNoLast Name, First Name, Arrest Date, or Charge Description.

Primary ChargeResult columnn/aOne short charge description per person.
Arrest DateResult columnn/aShown as Month DD, YYYY.
Data Last UpdatedTimestampn/aDate and time of the last refresh, shown above the list.

The recent arrest search is a separate tool with real input fields. It searches bookings from the last 15 days by last name, with an optional first name, or by a date range in mm/dd/yyyy format. Last name is required for the name search.

What a Johnston County Inmate Profile Shows

Click a name on the roster and a profile page opens. The Johnston County inmate profile is short. It shows who the person is, a booking date, a photo, and the charges with arrest dates. It does not show the bond, the court date, or where the person is housed in the jail. The table below lists what the inspected profile displayed and, in the last row, what it leaves out.

FieldWhat It Shows
NameThe inmate's full last and first name.
AgeThe person's age as a number.
RaceA one-letter code, such as B.
SexA one-letter code, such as F.
Booking DateThe date booked into the jail, shown as Month DD, YYYY.
Inmate PhotoA booking photo of the person.
ChargesA table listing each charge with its arrest date.
Not ShownBooking number, date of birth, height or weight, bond amount or type, housing or pod, magistrate, warrant number, court date, release date, and classification.

Because the profile leaves out bond and court dates, you need a second source for those. The eCourts Portal at portal-nc.tylertech.cloud/Portal/ shows public case and hearing data. You can also call the Clerk of Superior Court at (919) 209-5400. For the underlying charges, the arrest records page covers how charges move from booking to a court file.

Johnston County Jail Contact Information

The Johnston County Jail sits in downtown Smithfield, a short distance from the Sheriff's Office. The jail and the Sheriff's Office use different addresses and different phone lines, so it helps to dial the right one. The jail handles inmate questions through several direct numbers, split by topic. Inmate mail goes to a separate PO Box, not to the jail's street address. Booking and Bond in Johnston County

An arrest sets off several record trails. There is the law enforcement arrest record, the jail custody record, the magistrate and bond record, and the court case file. The Johnston County jail roster shows the custody layer. It does not publish a step-by-step booking workflow. Under North Carolina practice, magistrates conduct the initial appearance and set conditions of release, while the sheriff's jail books and holds the person.

Because the inmate profile does not list bond or court dates, you confirm those elsewhere. For an upcoming court date or bond detail, check the eCourts Portal or call the Clerk of Superior Court at (919) 209-5400. To ask about an attorney for an inmate, the jail FAQ says call the jail at 919-989-5040 or the clerk at 919-209-5400 with the inmate's full name. Johnston County's first Public Defender, A. Traynham Dorn of Defender District 13, took office July 1, 2024 and represents eligible people who cannot afford a lawyer.

Court records and Judicial Branch news offer a useful window into how Johnston County handles attorney appointments. The Judicial Branch reported on A. Traynham Dorn's appointment as Johnston County's first Public Defender.

That press release is a court news item, not a roster screenshot, but it matters here because the Public Defender now serves jailed defendants who cannot afford counsel. Active warrants tied to a booking can be checked on the warrant records page.

How Johnston County Inmate Charges Move Through Court

The charge on the roster is a starting point, not a verdict. Prosecutors can amend, dismiss, upgrade, or supersede charges as a case moves. A charge is not a conviction. For that reason, pair the jail profile with the court case to see the real outcome. Some charge types get special handling locally. In 2025 the state announced a Governor's Highway Safety Program grant to speed up DWI cases in three counties, including Johnston.

The Judicial Branch announced the $147,000 grant to expedite DWI cases in Johnston, Mecklenburg, and Wake counties.

This is a court news page, not the jail list, but it explains why a DWI charge on the roster may move faster than other cases through Johnston County District Court. For the full case history behind any roster charge, the arrest records page and the eCourts Portal are the right tools.

Alternatives to Jail in Johnston County

Not every case ends in a long jail stay. North Carolina runs Recovery Courts that supervise people with substance use or mental health needs instead of plain incarceration. Johnston County is part of the District 11A Veterans Treatment Court, which also serves Harnett and Lee counties. It offers eligible veterans an alternative path that links their court involvement to treatment and earned benefits.

The Judicial Branch featured the District 11A Veterans Treatment Court serving Harnett, Johnston, and Lee counties.

That article is a court news feature rather than a jail roster page, but it shows a real alternative for some people who would otherwise be on the inmate list. For broader custody counts and trends, see the inmate population page.

How to Contact a Johnston County Inmate

Mail and phone are the two main ways to reach a Johnston County inmate. Letters go to a PO Box, not the jail street address. Address mail to the inmate's name, P.O. Box 1496, Smithfield, NC 27577, and put a return address on the envelope. The rules on what you can send are tight. Inmates may receive only a soft-cover Bible or Koran. You may include up to five photos no larger than 5 by 7 inches.

Photos must be clean. No nudity, no sexually suggestive content, no gang signs, no drugs or alcohol, and no violence. Staff will not pass along verbal messages, so write or call instead. Phone service runs through Securus Communications. Inmates can call collect or buy phone cards twice a week using the jail phones. Family and friends can set up a prepaid Securus account by calling 1-800-844-6591, and Securus can explain call costs.

Commissary and Inmate Money in Johnston County

You can put money on an inmate's account three ways. A deposit kiosk sits in the criminal magistrate lobby outside the jail and runs 24 hours a day, and those deposits post right away. You can mail a money order or certified check made payable to the inmate's full name to P.O. Box 1496, Smithfield, NC 27577. You can also deposit online at www.jailatm.com, which lists its service fees on the site.

Inmates use their funds at the commissary. Commissary orders are limited to $40 per week. Inmates can buy hygiene items, writing materials, snacks, and calling cards. Money on the account also supports the Securus phone system. Keep deposits within the weekly limit, and remember that the jailatm.com option charges a fee that the kiosk and mail methods may not.

Recent Arrests and County Court Context

The Sheriff's Office also runs a recent arrest search, separate from the housed-inmate list. It covers bookings from the last 15 days. You can search by last name, with an optional first name, or by a date range using mm/dd/yyyy. This is handy when someone was just booked and you are not sure whether they are still in custody. The county courthouse remains the hub for the cases behind these arrests.

The county marked a courthouse milestone with an oath ceremony described on the Johnston County news page.

That county news item shows an oath ceremony in the Superior Courtroom with Judge Thomas Lock and Clerk Michelle Ball, not a jail roster, but it places the same courthouse that handles inmate cases in context. For a name no longer on the active list, the released inmates page explains how to verify release.

State Prison vs County Jail in Johnston County

The Johnston County jail roster only covers the county jail. People sentenced to longer terms move to North Carolina state prison, and the county list will not show them. To find someone in state custody, on probation, or on parole, use the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search. For federal inmates, the roster is no help at all; use the Bureau of Prisons locator instead.

Search state prison, probation, and parole status through the NC DAC offender search, and check federal custody on the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator. For ongoing custody alerts, register with VINELink / NC SAVAN rather than refreshing the jail list by hand. NC SAVAN sends free notifications by phone, email, text, or TTY and covers county jail inmates, state prisoners, probationers, parolees, and registered offenders.
